New or used car -- which is better?

http://www.NewsAndOpinion.com -- DEAR BRUCE: The people who handle my 401(k) tell me that my losses are only on paper and that the money is invested in stocks, so I should hang in and not sell at the low. Is this really true? Don't you start back up the hill with a lot less money? -- J.M., Kingsport, Tenn.

DEAR J.M.: Yes, you do have a whole lot less money, but that is a given. The question is, where will you go from here? If the money is invested in solid companies, the likelihood is that those stocks will recover. On the other hand, if you have invested in highly speculative stocks, such as Internet companies or other areas that have little promise, then you might wish to reevaluate and readjust your portfolio. You have to accept that this is where you are now. The question is, where will you be five or 10 years from now?

DEAR BRUCE: I am retired, my house is paid off, and I live in California. What is your opinion of getting a reverse mortgage on this house to get some extra cash so that we can travel and do other fun things? -- N.L., via e-mail

DEAR N.L.: Other things being equal, why not? You do realize that you will reduce your equity by doing this, but, on the other hand, who better to enjoy the money than you? The ability to borrow on a reverse mortgage is, in large measure, contingent on two factors: 1) the value of the home, and 2) your age. The older you are, the larger the monthly amount of money you will be granted on a reverse mortgage, because your life expectancy is shorter. No matter how much you have borrowed, if you have exhausted your ability to borrow, you will still be able to remain in the home for the balance of your life, which is a good deal.

DEAR BRUCE: Some people are of the opinion that it is never wise to buy a new car because of depreciation. Others point out that buying new cars is a wise decision because of the incentives of low- or no-interest-rate financing and warranties. What do you think? -- L.L., via e-mail

DEAR L.L.: There are other variables here that I think are just as important, if not more so. I don't think that the decision should be governed by the fact that there is reasonable financing available. Far more important is if you want a new automobile and whether you can afford it. A lot of folks enjoy a new car, and if they can afford it, why should they not have this pleasure? On the other hand, if money is in short supply, a good, used automobile makes a lot of sense. There are many people who view cars as an unimportant part of their life; it's something to get from point A to point B. For those folks, why spend a great deal of money on a new car when there are many fine, used cars available?
