Tell your kids to 'get real'

http://www.jewishworldreview.com -- DEAR BRUCE: I'm a 53-year-old widow. Fortunately, my husband left ample assets to care for me for the balance of my life. Now I am considering selling my home. It's not that I need the money, but frankly, rattling around this five-bedroom home all by myself just seems to be a waste. There is obviously a great deal to do around the house to keep it up, and I am tired of doing those things. The problem is that my children, who are all grown and on their own, are very sentimental about this house, and they are imploring me to keep it so that when they come home to visit, it will be in their old home. I'm not sure how to handle this. -- R.T., via e-mail

DEAR R.T.: You've got to be kidding. Are the kids cutting the grass, paying for the large fuel bills, washing windows, repairing the roof? I don't think so.

I think that you are very wise to consider getting into some new digs for another reason, too. It would give you a whole new start on your life. You are certainly young enough to pursue a new life. The last thing that you need is to live in memories. You might suggest that if they are so sentimental, that you would be glad to sell the house to one of them and they can maintain it. I think that your kids are being extremely selfish.

DEAR BRUCE: I know that you enjoy cruises and have taken many. We have never gone on a cruise, and I would like to try one. But there seems to be one problem. My husband refuses to go.

He said that he was on a ship when he went to Korea 45 years ago and was very unhappy. He has no desire to repeat the experience. What can I say to him to persuade him that we should take a cruise? -- C.N., Fort Smith, Ark.

DEAR C.N.: Well, the first thing you might tell him is that you are going to go on a cruise, and whether he goes or not is up to him. To draw an analogy between a troop ship of the '50s and today's modern cruise ship is like comparing the Wright Brothers aircraft to the 777. Like your husband, I too went overseas on a troop ship, and I can assure you that the only parallel that can be drawn is that they both float on the water. The modern cruise ships are comfortable, there is plenty to do and to use an excuse like this is specious. I would flat-out tell him that you are going on a cruise, and you hope he will come with you.

DEAR BRUCE: I am 50 years old and plan to retire somewhere in my early 60s. We have enjoyed going to Florida, not every winter but on a regular basis, and we would like to retire there. On a recent trip there we saw several homes that would be very attractive for retirement homes. We are wondering if we should buy one now to make sure that we have one when retirement time comes. -- T.S., Milwaukee, Wis.

DEAR T.S.: Unless you are going to spend several months of the year in Florida now, I would not even consider doing what you are proposing. Florida and other vacation areas are full of homes owned by "snow birds," which are being rented at sub-attractive rates. You would be far better to invest whatever monies that you would put into a Florida home in your own area and, when the time comes, sell that and take those dollars to buy a home in Florida. Rest assured there will be plenty on the market 10 years from now.
