Your tax protection is maxed-out; ealry birds and audits
DEAR BRUCE: Both my wife and I have maxed out our 401(k) plans. May we open an IRA to reduce our taxes further? -- Paul, via e-mail
DEAR PAUL: While you may invest in either a Roth IRA or a traditional IRA, you may not do so only to reduce your taxes because you have already taken maximum measures to do that. But if you have the $4,000 to invest, I strongly urge you to consider putting it into a Roth IRA. While you will have no tax benefit now, the future benefits can be substantial.
DEAR BRUCE: Do you have any idea whether you are more likely to be audited if you submit your taxes early (when presumably the tax guys are less busy) or wait until the deadline (when they are busier)? -- R.K., via e-mail
DEAR R.K.: I have discussed this with folks in the IRS and have read other discussions in the news media, and they all contend that neither filing now nor later makes a difference in the possibility of being audited between .
DEAR BRUCE: We are looking to save as much money as we possibly can. Last year, I gave a gift of $5,000 to my parents. How can I make it tax deductible? -- C.V., via e-mail
DEAR C.V.: Your gift would be taxable only if it exceeds $10,000 and you are not claiming against your lifetime exemption on such gifts. In no case that I know of is a gift deductible. Of course, if this "gift" exceeds 50 percent of the amount it takes to keep a family, then you may claim that they are your dependents. But this is an entirely different area. Generally speaking, a gift is a gift, and it's not
