NFL giving administration a big boost --- but don't credit them with being patriotic
http://www.NewsAndOpinion.com |
The National Football League gave the Bush administration a big
boost on Monday when it decided to go ahead with the NFL Europe
season.
As stocks
sagged on Monday, the NFL said the NFL Europe season would
go on despite a lot of anti-American sentiment around Europe,
particularly in Germany.
NFL Europe has three teams in Germany, and also has franchises
in Spain, the Netherlands and Scotland, all allies. The NFL
rightfully figures that eventually hostilities between European
countries and the Bush administration will cool down and that
Germany will be an important marketplace for the League.
The NFL has had a presence in Europe since the late 1980s and may
need Eurodollars in the short and long term.
The NFL will provide more security to its players in Europe but
at the end of the day, there is just too much potential revenue
available in European Union countries to justify canceling the
2003 NFL Europe season which will start on April 5 and ends in
June.
