People like to know things. We humans are curious creatures. We explore, we examine, we ask questions, and we expect answers. All well and good. Throughout our existence we have uncovered many things, some medical and scientific, some mundane yet interesting, and even some things that would have been better off not looked into at all. But there is one thing we can safely say about this mysterious world we live in, there are certain things we don't have answers for and may never, ever have those answers.
The big one, of course, is the question of life after death. Eventually we will all find out I suppose. But that is only incumbent on whether we still possess the ability to reason after we die. If we don't, then we still won't know a thing, will we? Too deep. We'd better move on to other less weighty mysteries.
We will never know if there are aliens from outer space being kept in undisclosed places by the government. There will always be skeptics no matter what the officials tell us. The same holds true for the JFK assassination. As far as the conspiracy theorists are concerned, they will never be satisfied that we know everything about what took place that day in November.
We will never know if there is really an abdominal snowman, or I should say abominable snowman. I always get those two mixed up. One is regarding the stomach, the other is something terrible. Of course you can have a terrible stomach, but I digress. Either case, we will never know. Is big foot for real? Are these missing links?
Jeffery Epstein. Forget about it. We will never know what really happened to him in his jail cell. Did he kill himself or was he murdered? And if he was murdered, who done it? We will never know for sure. Maybe the abdominal big foot guy did it.
Will the multi-trials of accused murderer Alex Murdaugh ever be over? We may never know. Just when we think it's over, it's not. Will Hillary Clinton and Barack and Michelle Obama ever retire from public life? Will the Democrats ever get over trying to demonize President Trump? Will President Trump finally get rid of the Iranian Islamist regime once and for all or will this thing go on forever?
Will we ever know what killed off the dinosaurs? One theory is that a massive asteroid impact about 66 million years ago caused it, but we will never know for sure. Other unknowables include what happens inside a black hole, how did life begin, how and by whom were Egypt's pyramids constructed, and why do we sleep?
What happened to Amelia Earhart? The first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic disappeared over the Pacific in an attempt to fly around the world in 1937. Her wreckage was never found and her fate remains a mystery to this day. We will never know the answer, but it might just have been the abdominal, abominable snowman, big foot.
But the biggest head scratcher for me took place during the nineteenth century and had to do with women's apparel. As the 1800's progressed, women's attire became, how to say, quite abundant. As author Bill Bryson recounts in his book, At Home, an average woman might wear beneath her dress a knee-length chemise, a camisole, up to half a dozen petticoats, a corset, and ample panties. All of which, it goes without saying (but I'll say it anyway) was extremally bulky and heavy. A woman walking around in her daily outfit could easily be carrying an additional forty pounds of clothing around on her.
The mystery to my mind isn't so much why a woman would dress that way (I imagine it had a lot to do with the modesty of the times). No, the big unanswered question I have is how was she able to manage her normal urinary function under those circumstances, and under that ton of clothing? This question is lost to history and I can promise you; we will never, never know. As I said, some things we're better off not knowing. Or even thinking about.
It's really none of our business.
