Why and when prez ought to strike
http://www.NewsAndOpinion.com |
Here's a one word explanation for Republican success at
the polls: Character.
Undecided voters concluded George W. Bush stood for
something and Democrats didn't -- and that he means what he says.
Now comes
an interesting stand-off between the president and U-N. Exhibit 1: Iraqi
missile batteries recently violated international law and U-N resolutions by
firing at U-S and British jets.
But U-N Secretary General Kofi Annan says
the violation isn't a violation because the new resolution that defines a
violation doesn't consider this violation a violation.
Got it?
Exhibit 2:
Chief Weapons inspector Hans Blix says that even if Saddam Hussein lies to
weapons inspectors and hides weapons of mass destruction, he may not violate
the resolution, which outlaws both activities.
In short, the UN can't
distinguish truth from falsehood. It can't call a lie a lie; a violation a
violation.
So what will happen if we find weapons in Saddam's possession? My
guess is the president will assemble a coalition of like-minded countries
and strike -- that's what he's promised and after all, it's all about
character.
