In my November 3rd column I took to task high profile Jewish celebrities who have remained silent since the October 7th atrocities committed against Israel by Palestinian murderers. From the beginning antisemites in America have boldly marched in packs declaring their support for Hamas and calling for the end of the Jewish state of Israel and yes, the death of all Jewish people.
Why haven't the American Jewish celebrities spoken out, I wondered. Where are Barbra Streisand, Rob Reiner, Woody Allen, Judge Judy Sheindlin, Robert Iger, Steven Spielberg, Michael Eisner, Jeffery Katzenberg and so many others? Okay, I'll give Mel Brooks a pass since he's so old he may not even know what's going on anymore. But where are the voices of the other Jewish celebrities?
In that piece I did mention that thankfully there were some exceptions. Jerry Seinfeld was one of several actors that put out an open letter on Oct. 12th in support of Israel and condemning the barbaric acts of terrorism perpetrated on them by Hamas.
Now this week I read a wonderful story about Seinfeld in The Times of Israel that I want to share with my readers here. It follows.
Comedian Jerry Seinfeld arrived in Israel Monday for a visit to show solidarity with the country in its war against Palestinian terror group Hamas in Gaza following its shock October 7 attack. Seinfeld and his family met late Monday with families of Israeli hostages held in the Gaza Strip as well as with hostages recently released from captivity.
"Seinfeld told the families that he feels a deep commitment to raising awareness around the world about the issue of the hostages," according to a statement issued by the Hostages and Missing Persons Families Forum Headquarters. He and his family were clearly "deeply affected" by the stories of "the experiences they heard from the family members and the released hostages." The statement said the families "thank the Seinfeld family for their moving visit to the families' headquarters and their unwavering support for the families of the hostages."
A Channel 13 report said the meeting lasted two hours longer than scheduled, and Seinfeld was "sensitive" and "caring." Seinfeld, wearing a symbolic "Bring them home" dog tag around his neck meant to draw attention to the plight of the hostages, waved to a camera as he got into a van but did not comment, in footage aired by the channel.
The channel said the Jewish-American entertainer planned to visit the southern border region and possibly meet with Israeli soldiers. The Jerusalem Post added that Seinfeld joins other Hollywood stars who have come to Israel to express solidarity with the nation following the horrific massacre of October 7, such asĂŠactor Michael Rapaport,ĂŠNickelodeon actor and singer James Maslow, actress Debra Messing, and producer Scooter Braun. (Spielberg, Iger, Katzenberg, Geffen where are you?)
It is gratifying to read that some good people are speaking out, and showing their support for Israel at a time when so much of the world has lost its moral compass and has shown itself to be not only against the state of Israel, but truly antisemitic, calling for Jewish extermination in exactly the same way Adolph Hitler did. Thank you and bless you Jerry Seinfeld for your courage, common sense, and sensitivity. You are a real mensch!
