‘The Real Deal’ on White House hypocrisy

http://www.NewsAndOpinion.com | An American president rolls up his sleeves and goes to work for Mideast peace. Terrorists strike at Israel. Israel responds. And the United States attacks the state of Israel. If you're wondering why some of our closest allies are calling George Bush a hypocrite, here's the Real Deal.

GEORGE BUSH made all the right moves before, during and after the war in Iraq. He then used his hard-earned prestige to push for peace in the Middle East. Considering it hasn't been achieved in 3,000 years, that's a pretty tough undertaking, to say the least.

This week, the president attacked the Israelis for responding to a Palestinian terrorist attack. That got more than a few of our allies in an uproar-and for good reason.

We all know the terrorists who make up Hamas will continue killing little children and old ladies for as long as it takes to derail the peace process. We also know that Yasser Arafat is doing absolutely nothing to stop the slaughter of the innocents. If Israel directs attacks at the Hamas leaders who are trying to destroy the peace process, is that really something we want to condemn?

Yesterday I took my boys and their friends down to the World Trade Center sight, and I was pointing out from a distance where those two huge towers once stood. My younger boy asked what the two towers were called. I stopped for a second and smiled, telling him one was called Afghanistan and the other, Iraq.

It was black humor that went over my son's head. But, it underlines an important point tonight: When America gets attacked, we take over a country for every building that gets knocked down. And the last thing we want to hear is some whiney Frenchman or UN diplomat telling us to turn the other cheek. So are we really in a position to tell the Israelis how to refrain when their own people get blown up in terror attacks? And even if we were, would that really be the right policy to promote?

No, no, a thousand times no. Terrorists must be hunted down and killed. Whether they live in the mountains of Afghanistan, North Carolina, or Gaza. Now is not the time to back down in our war on terror. Let's make peace with the Palestinians, but pursue those who promote terror.

It's common sense, and it's the Real Deal.
