Kennedys not expected to support in-law Schwarzenegger

http://www.jewishworldreview.com | (KRT) The Kennedys love their in-law Arnold Schwarzenegger to death - but don't expect support from Camelot in his bid to be California's governor.

Schwarzenegger's wife, Maria Shriver, has proclaimed her support for his candidacy and is considered a powerful asset.

But other members of America's Democratic dynasty have toed the line drawn by patriarch Sen. Ted Kennedy, D-Mass., who showered praise on the Republican action star last week but vowed to oppose his political premiere.

"Many in the family are looking on it with a little bit of amusement," a source close to the Kennedy family said yesterday. "It remains to be seen how much longer he can get away with recycling quips from old movies."

A spokesman for Ted's son, Rep. Patrick Kennedy, D-R.I., said, "The congressman is very proud of Arnold, and very happy for him. However, the congressman is supporting the Democrat."

The Kennedys have done a political balancing act ever since Schwarzenegger and Shriver - a TV journalist and daughter of Ted Kennedy's sister Eunice, and Sargent Shriver - wed in 1986.

"Don't look at him as a Republican, look at him as the man I love," Shriver reportedly told Uncle Ted. "And if that doesn't work, look at him as someone who can squash you."

Although Schwarzenegger has crossed the political line to raise money - and even campaign - for Ted Kennedy, the Kennedys would never consider returning the favor, the family source said.

"He's a brilliant actor, but what makes Republicans think he could do well in politics?" Ted Kennedy told Time magazine this month. "Of course, it's hard to argue with Arnold when you're hanging upside down by the ankles."
