Land of Lincoln bans Abe's official coin | (UPI) In the Land of Lincoln one might think anything with the 16th president's likeness would be sacred but Illinois actually could become one of the first states to ban Abe's official coin, the penny, from its tollways.

The Chicago Tribune says a proposal by the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority's executive director would prohibit the use of pennies when paying tolls. The coins are considered neither time-efficient nor cost-effective.

A survey by the International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association finds toll agencies from New Hampshire to California accept pennies, though many do so begrudgingly, the paper says.

"The collectors don't especially like them," Carl DeFebo, Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission spokesman, told the paper. "They feel this is something that slows them down."
