Consumer Reports

Riding lawn tractors on recall list | (UPI) -- As warm weather approaches the Murray company says it's recalling more than a quarter-million riding lawn mowers. The Tennessee-based company, cooperating with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, says that about 270,000 units are involved in the recall because of fuel tank problems.

The recall notice says the tanks can crack and leak gasoline, posing a burn and fire hazard. The recalled lawn tractors were merchandised as both Murray and Stanley and the brand name is printed on the front or side of the tractors and mowers.

The recall covers models with 38-, 40-, 42-, 46- and 52-inch cutting decks.

Retail and hardware stories, including Wal-Mart and Home Depot, sold the lawn equipment from the fall of 2000 through January of this year. Some of the larger models went for as much as $1,500.

Consumers are being asked to contact their nearest Murray Service Center for a free replacement fuel tank. For more information contact the company at (800) 876-1634.
