Consumer Reports

Kids joining health clubs | (UPI) -- International Health says Racquet & Sportsclub Association membership among teens and preteens has jumped 65 percent in the past five years.

Young kids may be drawn to health clubs by the blaring music, television, Internet access and the chance to act grownup, but the incentive for many is fitness, TIME magazine reports.

The biggest challenge for clubs is figuring out how to reach out to kids without alienating adult members -- some clubs cordon off junior classes; others designate "adults only" areas.

Growing numbers use the clubs to enhance their strength and agility on the basketball, tennis or volleyball court.

However, some teenagers use the multifaceted clubs as dating destinations.
