Car plates could honor Columbia crew | (UPI) -- A member of the Florida Legislature wants the ill-fated Columbia added to Florida plates that already honor the shuttle Challenger. According to state legislative records, Sen. Bill Posey says the simplest thing to do would be to retain the current image of the space shuttle on state plates and add the word "Columbia."

Under a bill introduced by Posey, half of the $25 paid by drivers for the commemorative plates would go to a relief fund for the surviving families of the astronauts and to a fund to promote the use of science obtained during space flights.

The legislator's district includes the Cape Canaveral area. He tells Florida media he does not think printing a second shuttle plate specifically to honor the Columbia crew is a good idea. He prefers a joint plate honoring all 14 astronauts.
