New attack at Alamo | (UPI) -- The Alamo is under attack again but this time, the San Antonio Express-News reports, the enemy is a swarm of termites, not Gen. Antonio López de Santa Anna, who led the charge 167 years ago.

This week hundreds of termite monitors were placed around the Alamo grounds. While most of the landmark is stone, the wood-chomping insects have been feasting on wood beams and wood that surrounds windows and doors.

A Sentricon Termite Colony Elimination System, in use at the Statue of Liberty, White House and the Texas Capitol, was installed around the buildings on the Alamo grounds, the paper says.

Tubes filled with pieces of wood will be monitored for termite activity. Once termites are detected, the tubes will be filled with poisoned bait for the insects to carry back to their colony.
