The biggest improvements are two new features that help deal with the problem of dynamically assigned IP addresses. Using the new Internet Locator service you can select a remote computer by entering the user's e-mail address, and a new tab in the main window lets you browse or search a list of available remote computers maintained on an LDAP server.
IMPORTANT NOTE: In rare cases, the installation of this product may conflict with other non-Microsoft software so as to leave your Windows NT 4.0 system in an unbootable state. Practice "safe computing" by backing up before you install this, or any other software on your computer.
· If your system has any other remote control software, UNINSTALL IT AND REBOOT before installing Timbuktu Pro.
· Uninstall any old version of Timbuktu Pro before installing this version. Uninstalling may take up to five or ten minutes depending on your system. When the uninstaller is finished, you will get a dialog asking you to reboot to complete uninstallation.
· To install Timbuktu Pro on a Windows NT 4.0 system, you must be logged on with either Administrator or Domain Administrator privileges.
· Remember that Windows NT 4.0 is a secure environment. Allowing anyone except the administrator to install a remote control program is a serious breach of security. Administrators may selectively grant users permission to modify the registry and to install or remove the necessary device drivers. To facilitate support and to maintain a known configuration, most administrators prohibit ordinary users from installing this software.
· After uninstalling Timbuktu Pro, you must restart Windows NT 4.0 before reinstalling. Timbuktu Pro is not completely removed until Windows NT 4.0 has been restarted. If you attempt to install Timbuktu Pro before the previous version is fully uninstalled, you will get an incomplete Timbuktu Pro installation on your system.
· Installing Timbuktu Pro on Windows NT 4.0 without first completely uninstalling other remote-control software and then rebooting may cause a video hooking conflict, which may leave your system unbootable. You can usually work around such a conflict by choosing the VGA option from NT's boot menu.
The new LDAP tab in Timbuktu Pro's main window lets you connect to remote computers by browsing or searching a list maintained by an LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) server, like Netscape Directory Server. This provides a handy central directory of available remote computers that is automatically updated as TCP/IP addresses change.
Using LDAP. To select a remote computer using the LDAP tab:
1. Select the LDAP tab in the Timbuktu Pro main window.
2. In the Search For field, type the criteria by which you’d like to search the directory. The search covers all six fields in the LDAP display, so your search criteria could be all or part of the computer’s name, IP address, user’s name, e-mail address, location, or comment. (If you can’t see all six fields, maximize or resize the window.) Though they're not displayed, you can also search by machine name or user login name. To see the whole directory, search for *.
3. When you’ve entered your search criteria, click Find Now or press Alt-N. If you get a "Search Failed" message, check the Server name setting discussed in the next section and make sure it's correct.
Turning on LDAP. Timbuktu Pro’s LDAP tab appears only if it has been switched on. If you don’t see it, here’s how to enable it.
4. Choose LDAP from the Setup menu. On the General tab, check Enable LDAP Directory feature.
5. In the Server name field, enter the name of your LDAP server.
6. Select the Advanced tab. In the Directory service (LDAP) field, type 389 (or an alternate port number, if your LDAP configuration is nonstandard).
7. In the Search base field, type o=timbuktu, then click OK to save.
Changing your LDAP profile. To edit your own data in the LDAP directory, choose LDAP from the Setup menu and select the User’s Profile tab. Revise the four fields (User's Name, E-mail Address, Location, and Comment) as you wish, then click OK to save the changes.
The new Internet Locator service (ILS) allows you to select a computer you want to control or communicate with by entering the user's e-mail address in the TCP/IP Address tab of the TCP/IP tab in Timbuktu Pro's main window.
Setting up ILS. You need to enable ILS and enter your e-mail address before you can use this feature. Here's how:
1. Choose Preferences from the Setup menu. On the General tab, check Internet Locator enabled..
2. In the E-mail Address field, enter your e-mail address, then click OK to save. (If you have more than one computer, use your e-mail address for one, and make up a different address for each of the others.)
You can now resize Timbuktu Pro's main window by dragging its borders, or enlarge it to fill the screen by clicking the Maximize button. The window will also save its settings on exit, and reappear the same size, in the same spot, the next time you launch it.
When you type the first few characters of a recently-accessed address in the TCP/IP Address field on the TCP/IP tab, Timbuktu Pro automatically fills in the rest of the address.
Timbuktu Pro now connects to non-NT remote computers much more quickly.
When you connect to an NT workstation, Timbuktu Pro now checks to see if a user is logged in and no screen saver is running. If that's the case, it doesn't blank the screen, on the assumption that the user is sitting there watching what you're doing (the usual situation if you're working at a help desk).
If no one is logged in or a screen saver is running, Timbuktu Pro blanks the screen to protect your privacy. When you disconnect, it locks the workstation.
If your attempt to establish a connection is rejected by a remote Windows NT system, a dialog now appears in which you can enter another Windows NT userid and password.
The NT Users dialog in Timbuktu Pro's Security setup dialog now shows only trusted domains.
This build fixes two bugs that occur only on Windows NT systems with Service Pack 4:
· Crash after logging in as a different user on a locked system.
· Failure to initialize MiniTB2 after shutdown.
Note: Installing Service Pack 5 will also correct these problems.
