FROM THE HEART

[Today's issue is below. PLEASE read what follows til the end. It's a quick, breezy read.]

"Give us money. We deserve it. We help you, so don't be an ingrate."

That was the gist of a fund raising letter I received. And I'm only slightly exaggerating.

There's no doubt that the genius who approved the mailing was certain that his "in your face" tactic would work. What can I tell you? The cause may have been a respectable one, but I found the appeal didn't have any. Actually, it was downright obnoxious. But it does serve a purpose. It neatly encapsulates the dilemma those who fund raise for causes face.

Please bear with me, just a tad.

When asking for the public's help in enabling worthy projects, a fundraiser can be subtle (and risk his message may not be fully appreciated), use guilt (no explanation needed) or sound distraught (and risk losing those who might wrongly assume that a "sinking ship" can't be rescued in time). Which approach to use is a hard call.

You are my friends --- and I don't mean the Facebook type, either. You have been with me through all sorts of highs and, tragically, lows in my personal life. You've sent me notes that raised my spirits, consoled me and, when needed, called me out for the times I muffed up.

One of the most frequent, recurring comments I get is folks referring to me as "real". They say they admire the "non-corporate" feel JWR has. They like the fact that I comment on my own material I publish; that I talk frankly in the newsletter and on the site.

So, here's me "talking".

I view my readers as my friends --- and I don't mean the Facebook type, either. You have been with me through all sorts of highs and, tragically, lows in my personal life. You've sent me notes that raised my spirits, consoled me and, when needed, called me out for the times I muffed up.

I view you -- and I've had electronic exchanges with many of my readers over the years, so I know -- as thoroughly good folks who are hardworking, and therefore busy. But while you appreciate refined journalism, you may not fully understand what it takes to produce it: The time and, most importantly, the expense. How can you?

I regularly receive notes from grateful readers who think it's wonderful that I "link" and "gather" such wonderful material. But I don't, nor do I "borrow" (without permission) from other sites, as too many blogs do. I do it the old fashioned legal way: I license -- i.e. buy -- those offerings. That's why, all totaled, it costs more than $150,000 each year to run JWR. Some of it is offset with advertising, but not nearly enough.

More importantly is the painstaking effort. When you go a top tier restaurant and order a really good steak (no offense, vegans), you only see the piece of meat before you. You don't see all that was cut away. What you are enjoying is the skill of selection. The painstaking production. The time and knowledge of what's best and what you will appreciate. JWR is a prime thick, juicy steak to feed your intellectual and spiritual appetite.

JWR is not the New York Times. Nor does it aspire to be. While JWR's offerings are more limited, I'm willing to wager that you believe the product is far superior. JWR is also most definitely not NPR in that we aren't government subsidized to the tune of tens of millions each year in tax-payer money.

But like NPR, we do rely on donations from those who avail themselves of our offerings.

There are roughly 100,000 people who receive the daily JWR update and tens of thousands who visit the site daily. But to date, only about 700 -- not even a thousand, or 1 percent -- have donated.

JWR can't survive on that level of donations. It just isn't possible.

I know times are tough. And I know many of you want to give but are embarrassed because you can only give what you consider to be a small amount amount. But all of those "small amounts" add up.

If each of you would send something it would make a tremendous difference.

You can send a tax-deductible one time donation through our secure server -- or -- you can donate a scheduled amount monthly. Some readers give a dime a day (i.e., $3.00 per month) this way. Obviously, you can cancel should the need arise.

But whatever you send will be valued and appreciated --- and truly needed.

Please give now.

Thank you for your friendship, your readership, and for your support. Particularly to the several hundred who already responded.

Binyamin L. Jolkovsky,
Editor in Chief
