• 2002, American schoolchildren escaped a rebel-held Ivory Coast city that was under siege as U.S. special forces and French troops moved in to rescue Westerners caught in the West African nation's bloody uprising
• 2004, U.S. warplanes, tanks and artillery repeatedly hit at Abu Musab al-Zarqawi's terror network in the insurgent stronghold of Fallujah, Iraq
• 2006, British forces in Iraq shot and killed Omar al-Farouq, a leading al-Qaida terrorist, more than a year after he embarrassed the U.S. military by escaping from a maximum security military prison in Afghanistan. ALSO: Four French tourists kidnapped y practitioners of that "religion of peace" in Yemen were freed after more than two weeks in captivity
• 2008, Republican John McCain and Democrat Barack Obama sat down with President George W. Bush at the White House to discuss a multibillion-dollar Wall Street bailout plan, but the session, which also included top congressional leaders, devolved into what the McCain campaign described afterward as a "contentious shouting match." ALSO: After a 43-year wait, Paul McCartney performed his first concert in Israel, saying he was on a mission of peace for Israel and Muslims
• 2010, a federal judge gave California the go-ahead to resume executions after an almost five-year ban while procedures were reformed and a new death chamber was built
• 2011, Saudi Arabian King Abdullah granted women the right to vote and run for local office in future elections, starting in 2015, but turned down a bid for them to be allowed to drive
• 2012, President Barack Obama, speaking to the U.N. General Assembly, pledged U.S. support for Syrians trying to oust President Bashar Assad, calling him "a dictator who massacres his own people." U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said, "We must stop the violence and flows of arms to both sides." Mitt Romney joined running mate Paul Ryan for two days of campaigning in Ohio. A survey of consumer confidence reached its highest level since February on expectations that hiring would soon pick up. ALSO: China christened its first aircraft carrier. Officials said it would be used for training and testing but critics said it was a waste of money and likely would never be used in combat
• 2014, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder announced he was resigning after six years in the post. He said he would stay on until a successor was named. (Loretta Lynch was sworn-in to the office in April 2015.)
• 2016, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump met separately in New York with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, giving each candidate fresh foreign-policy talking points on the eve of their first presidential debate
