• 1522, the Victoria, the only surviving ship of Ferdinand Magellan's expedition, returns to Sanlucar de Barrameda in Spain, becoming the first ship to circumnavigate the world
• 1620, the Pilgrims sail from Plymouth, England, on the Mayflower to settle in North America. (Old Style date; September 16 per New Style date)
• 1628 , Puritans settle Salem, which will later become part of Massachusetts Bay Colony
• 1847, Henry David Thoreau leaves Walden Pond and moves in with Ralph Waldo Emerson and his family in Concord, Massachusetts
• 1861, during the American Civil War: Forces under Union General Ulysses S. Grant bloodlessly capture Paducah, Kentucky, which gives the Union control of the mouth of the Tennessee River
• 1901, anarchist Leon Czolgosz shoots and fatally wounds US President William McKinley at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York
• 1909, word was received that U.S. Navy Adm. Robert Peary had reached the North Pole five months earlier, on April 6, 1909
• 1939, during World War II: South Africa declares war on Germany
• 1949 , Allied military authorities relinquish control of former Nazi Germany assets back to German control. ALSO: A former sharpshooter in World War II, Howard Unruh kills 13 neighbors in Camden, New Jersey, with a souvenir Luger to become the first U.S. single-episode mass murderer
• 1970, two passenger jets bound from Europe to New York are simultaneously hijacked by practitioners of that "religion of peace" and taken to Dawson's Field in Jordan
• 1972, the Munich Massacre: 9 Israel athletes taken hostage at the Munich Olympic Games by the "Black September" terrorist group comprised of that "religion of peace". They were murdered as was a German policeman by the kidnappers during a failed rescue attempt. 2 other Israeli athletes are slain in the initial attack the previous day
• 1986, in Istanbul, two practitioners of that "religion of peace" from Abu Nidal's organization kill 22 and wound six inside the Neve Shalom synagogue during Sabbath services
• 1991, the name Saint Petersburg is restored to Russia's second largest city, which had been renamed Leningrad in 1924
• 1995, Cal Ripken Jr of the Baltimore Orioles plays in his 2,131st consecutive game, breaking a record that stood for 56 years
• 1997, the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales takes place in London. Over a million people lined the streets and 2.5 billion watched around the world on television
• 2001, in a dramatic shift, the Bush administration abandoned the Clinton-era effort to break up Microsoft. ALSO: Mexican President Vicente Fox addressed a joint session of the U.S. Congress, urging greater trust between the neighboring countries as the basis for "a new partnership in North America." AND: Barry Bonds became the fifth player in baseball history to hit 60 home runs in a season, connecting in the second inning of San Francisco's game against Arizona. The NFL referees' union rejected the league's latest contract offer (replacement officials worked the opening weekend of the regular season)
• 2005, New Orleans' mayor ordered everyone to leave the city or face possible removal by force. Most of the 500,000 displaced people were staying in nearby states but some were housed as far away as Massachusetts
• 2006, President George W. Bush acknowledged for the first time that the CIA was running secret prisons overseas and said tough interrogation had forced terrorist leaders to reveal plots to attack the United States and its allies
• 2012, a jury in Joliet, Ill., found Drew Peterson, a former police sergeant, guilty of first-degree murder in the death of his third wife, Kathleen Savio. Peterson was sentenced to 38 years in prison
• 20016, the campaign for president became even more intense when Democrat Hillary Clinton accused Republican Donald Trump of insulting America's veterans and pressing dangerous military plans. Trump, meanwhile, declared "our country is going to hell" because of policies he said Clinton would make even worse
