70, the destruction of the Second Temple in Jerusalem by the Romans (secular calendar)

1693, date traditionally ascribed to Dom Perignon's invention of Champagne

1735, the standard of truth as a defense against a claim of libel was established in the American colonies when John Peter Zenger, publisher of a New York City newspaper, was acquitted of libel charges

1892, the family of Lizzie Borden is found murdered in their Fall River, Massachusetts home

1914, during World War I: Germany invades Belgium. In response, the United Kingdom declares war on Germany. The United States declares its neutrality

1934, Mel Ott became the first major-league baseball player to score six runs in a single game

1944, Anne Frank, 15, was arrested along with her sister, parents and four others by German security after hiding for two years inside a building in Amsterdam. (Anne, who'd kept a now-famous diary during her time in hiding, died in March 1945 at the Bergen-Belsen Nazi concentration camp.)

1953: Eisenhower warns of "ominous" situation in Asia

1964, civil rights workers Michael Schwerner, Andrew Goodman and James Chaney are found dead in Mississippi after disappearing on June 21

1969, during the Vietnam War: at the apartment of French intermediary Jean Sainteny in Paris, U.S. representative Henry Kissinger and North Vietnamese representative Xuan Thuy begin secret peace negotiations. The negotiations will eventually fail

1977, President Jimmy Carter signs legislation creating the United States Department of Energy

1987, the Federal Communications Commission rescinds the Fairness Doctrine which had required radio and television stations to present controversial issues "fairly"

1993, a federal judge sentences LAPD officers Stacey Koon and Laurence Powell to 30 months in prison for violating motorist Rodney King's civil rights

2001, thousands of admirers turned out in London to celebrate the 101st birthday of Britain's Queen Mother Elizabeth in what would be the last such celebration. (The Queen Mother died in March 2002.) ALSO: North Korean leader Kim Jong Il and Russian President Vladimir Putin held talks in Moscow

2005, Al-Qaida's No. 2, Ayman al-Zawahri, threatened the United States with tens of thousands of military dead if it did not withdraw from Iraq; President George W. Bush responded by saying, "We will stay the course, we will complete the job."

2006, Israeli warplanes destroyed four key bridges on Lebanon's last untouched highway, severing the country's final major connection to Syria

2007, Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants tied Hank Aaron's 755 career home runs in a 3-2 loss to the Padres in San Diego. ALSO: Alex Rodriguez of the New York Yankees became at age 32 the youngest player in major league history to hit his 500th career home run, during a home game against Kansas City. ALSO: The U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation calling on most utilities to produce 15 percent of their electricity from renewable energy sources, such as wind or solar power

2009, North Korean leader Kim Jong Il pardoned American journalists Laura Ling and Euna Lee for entering the country illegally and ordered their release during a surprise visit by former U.S. President Bill Clinton

2010, BP PLC reported the broken well head at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico was plugged up with mud; President Barack Obama said the battle to contain one of the world's worst oil spills was "finally close to coming to an end." ALSO: Eight days after turning 35, Alex Rodriguez hit his 600th home run, becoming the youngest player to attain the milestone. (A-Rod's two-run, first-inning drive off Toronto's Shaun Marcum put New York ahead, and the Yankees coasted to a 5-1 victory over the Blue Jays.)

2013, Security forces closed roads, put up extra blast walls and increased patrols near some of the more than 20 U.S. diplomatic missions in the Muslim world that Washington had ordered closed for the weekend following warnings of a possible al-Qaida attack.

2016, speaking to reporters at the Pentagon, President Barack Obama vigorously denied that a $400 million cash payment to Iran was ransom to secure the release of four Americans jailed in Tehran
