Finances for residential and health care arrangements for older people have become complex, even frightening. These sites give a look at options and how to pay for them.
—Medicare site. Long-term care choices — including in-law apartments and continuing-care retirement communities, in addition to nursing homes — should be studied by families well in advance of the need. The government's Medicare site provides this overview of the major choices, lists costs from low to high, and allows the visitor to explore each option in detail. http://go.philly.com/elder1
—Finance for seniors. Seniorresource.com bills itself as a reference on "housing options and information for retirement, finance, insurance and care." Its finance page covers reverse mortgages, estate planning and related subjects. http://go.philly.com/elder2
In the same site's section on housing choices, more than a dozen options are covered, including staying where you are — a choice often now described as "aging in place." Other arrangements include shared housing, and something called "congregate housing," where people living in private apartments voluntarily share daily living activities. http://go.philly.com/elder3
—Homes for the aging. The American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging represents 5,700 nonprofit groups that supply a range of housing and other support for seniors. Its website has a directory as well as basic guidance on how to pay for services, shop for long-term care insurance, and get over the mistake of thinking the government will pay for it all. http://www.aahsa.org
—Sobering lesson. A 13-minute audiovisual presentation at the site of the Kaiser Family Foundation presents "Financing Long-Term Care 101" — a tutorial that warns "individuals must first rely on their own resources" for elder care. http://go.philly.com/elder4
