In the 1970's, a difficult economic time under Jimmy Carter with his "misery index," 1 in 50 Americans was on food stamps. Today that number is 1 in 7. Just since 2008 the number of people in food stamp programs has doubled -- and the Democrats spin this as one of their great accomplishments.
Democrats say the economy is "fine" and "recovering," yet the number of Americans on food stamps has grown exponentially. They cannot have it both ways, taking credit for food stamp program growth while maintaining that, under their policies, the economy is getting better.
I would never have thought that any politician could be proud of the fact that now 45 million Americans (and many illegals) are dependent on the government with the monthly SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program).
What was intended to be a temporary "safety net" for people who fell on hard times has become for many a way of life. Our safety net has become a safety hammock.
Most of what is done in Washington is hidden in spending bills with high-minded sounding names that divert voters with short attention spans. Obamacare is the "Affordable Care Act," and is the biggest tax increase in American history. The recently passed Farm Bill was a whopping $970 billion--78% of which goes to food stamp programs.
Let's not forget that our credit rating was downgraded under this administration and we lost our AAA status. Obama's financial wizard, Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, reacted to the news: "OK, then what happens if our car breaks down on the side of the road?"
The administration seemed totally blindsided by the downgrade, like a Kardashian husband.
First, the USDA encouraged people to have food stamp parties to promote the program. Now, in an election year, USDA is spending money advertising on Spanish-language soap operas for the first time, targeting Latino voters and, implicitly, illegals. Ay, caramba!
Virtually unreported by the media, Obama gutted welfare reform when he signed an order saying welfare recipients would get paid and no longer have to be actively looking for work. The left views that as brilliant; it will double the ratings on daytime soaps on which he just bought ads.
The epidemic of obesity in America, especially among the poor, indicates to me that we are plenty well-fed. Our garbage disposals eat better than most third world countries. In this country we have people with welfare-funded i-Phones standing in line for government handouts.
I am concerned by what we have become: a country of moochers who expect others to work and to pay for their own sloth. The sad thing is that the Democrats and their welfare-consuming constituents do not even say "thank you" to those top 20% of tax payers who pay a record 94% of all federal taxes. Instead they resent us, angry because we want justification for this enormous growth in dependency.
Somehow, the Obama team's narrative is that hard-working taxpayers are the villains and they need to pay more as their "fair share." What they are really saying is that the 20% of us who pay 94% of taxes are not doing enough for them.
We are not asking for a thank-you note. We just can't understand the contempt of Democrats for those who pay the taxes, which they then use to buy the votes of the takers in society.
This is not who we were or should be as a country. Our grandparents would pretend not to be sick so they could work. They lied about their ages so they could fight for our country in World War II. Today, people take pride in being on disability, taking government assistance and doing nothing to deserve it.
There is a difference between need and greed. Welfare is the crystal meth of tyrants. Once you are hooked, they own you and your self-worth, especially when they convince you that you "deserve" to live off the hard work of others.
Expecting others to pay their way makes the takers slaves to politicians and to government. They like it that you owe them. A person cannot ultimately have self-esteem when he is not self-sufficient. The real crime here is that dependency robs man of his sense of self-worth --- and his humanity.
