1633, the Holy Office in Rome forces Galileo Galilei to recant his view that the Sun, not the Earth, is the center of the Universe

1807, a British frigate, the HMS Leopard, attacked and boarded the American ship USS Chesapeake off the Virginia coast in search of Royal Navy deserters

1825, British Parliament abolishes feudalism and the seigneurial system in British North America

1848, beginning of the June Days Uprising in Paris, the French workers' revolt

1870, the U.S. Department of Justice was created

1898, during the Spanish-American War: United States Marines land in Cuba

1937, Joe Louis began his reign as world heavyweight boxing champion by knocking out Jim Braddock in the eighth round of their fight in Chicago

1938, Joe Louis knocked out Max Schmeling in the first round of their rematch at Yankee Stadium

1940, during World War II, Adolf Hitler, ym"sh, gained a stunning victory as France was forced to sign an armistice eight days after German forces overran Paris

1944, President Roosevelt signed the "GI Bill of Rights"

1945, the World War II battle for Okinawa ended with an Allied victory; some 13,000 Americans and 90,000 Japanese soldiers, plus 130,000 civilians, were killed in the nearly three-month campaign

1970, President Nixon signed an extension of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 that lowered the minimum voting age to 18

1977, John N. Mitchell became the first former U.S. Attorney General to go to prison as he began serving a sentence for his role in the Watergate cover-up. (He was released 19 months later.)

1999, the Supreme Court ruled the Americans with Disabilities Act does not extend to people with poor eyesight or other correctable conditions

2000, independent Counsel Robert Ray ended his investigation of the 1993 firings in the White House travel office, issuing no indictments but saying he'd found "substantial evidence" that First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton played a role in the dismissals

2004, practitioners of that "religion of peace" beheaded Kim Sun-il, a South Korean hostage who'd pleaded for his life in a heart-wrenching videotape; he was the third foreign hostage decapitated in the Middle East in little over a month.

2006, the Red Cross finally admitted Israel as a member and allowed it to use a Star of David as its symbol. ALSO: During a visit to Hungary to commemorate the 1956 revolt against communism, President Bush said war-weary Iraqis could learn from the Hungarians' long and bloody struggle against tyranny

2011, President Barack Obama announced he would pull home 33,000 troops from Afghanistan by the following summer. AND: James "Whitey" Bulger, the longtime fugitive Boston crime boss and fixture on the FBI's 10 Most Wanted list, was arrested in Santa Monica, Calif.

2012, accused child-molester Jerry Sandusky, a former Penn State assistant football coach, was convicted on 45 abuse charges. He was sentenced to up to 60 years in prison

2013, the fiery crash of a stunt biplane at an air show in Dayton, Ohio, killed wing walker Jane Wicker and pilot Charlie Schwenker. "They were true, ultimate professionals," the show's president said

2015, South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley said the Confederate flag should be removed from the grounds of the state capitol, reversing her position on the divisive symbol amid growing calls for it to be removed
