Migration madness: Mental illness on rise

http://www.JewishWorldReview.com | The country is feeling ill. Patients already ill are feeling worse. Actually mentally ill! So say a number of psychiatrists with whom we have spoken. It's a lot more than about gas prices. It's about being invaded by trespassers wanting free handouts and then demonstrating in our streets about their rights while waving foreign flags and threatening to harm our economy.

A local newspaper in it's, "Question of the Day," asked their readers what effect the Monday, May 1, pro-illegal immigrant boycott had on their communities and lives.

For the most part readers in the Newport Beach-Costa Mesa area reported that the cities were calm and lives were not disrupted. Many persons of Hispanic background that residents were accustomed to seeing and doing business with at local businesses, stores and restaurants came to work. Admittedly, the hometown of this writer from the O.C. is not representative.

But locally people were emotionally angry and upset and discussions at the some local coffee shops quickly escalated in to shouting matches. People in this community and the country are on edge and fear the worst.

That said, on a deeper level we must be careful not to draw many conclusions (overestimate or underestimate) from Monday's staged boycott. Nor should we underestimate America's resolve to respond to any perceived or real threat to our safety and economy.

Even if we were to lose all illegal immigrant workers — California and the nation would survive.

WHY?

  • If the illegals were to stage a sustained work boycott, American ingenuity over weeks and months and spurred on by the increased demand for workers, would develop a whole new set of technologies and innovative work methods. In spite of the elegance of the illegal's false rhetoric, many of the 15 million unemployed Americans would absorb some of the jobs left behind. The market forces of supply and demand would quickly take over as with any other economic challenge.

  • Yes, strawberries might climb to $6.00 a basket but this is a pittance compared to the current social-economic-medical-educational and crime/incarceration costs. Americans might learn to pick their own strawberries as many now do with apples at the many apple orchards in the East, Midwest and West.

  • On a usual day there would not be the many planned road and route closures plus hundreds of thousands of marchers that clogged our streets and caused delays in some areas.

  • On a regular day the press and electronic media would not be fueling, flaming and encouraging the protests and boycotts to pursue their own agendas. Nor would the media be able to overhype or purposely misinterpret the results of the boycott. During the last demonstrations in March and early April one O.C. paper reported that 500,000 marched in Los Angeles while another wrote it was 50,000!

This is not to say we desire or should require all illegals to leave immediately. Most persons in the O.C. , California and the nation ask that the broken pipeline be fixed immediately so we can then deal intelligently with the issue. If a water pipe broke in your home or yard would you debate the issue for 25 years — or first fix the leak and then proceed to solve the problem.

And finally we should be thankful that the boycotts were mainly peaceful and orderly which is in itself a tribute to our democratic process and system. On the plus side, perhaps this bodes well for those who are here, legally or illegally, that a solution can be worked out that is wise and sensible.

In the meantime keep up the ongoing dialogue your psychiatrists and psychologists. Editor's Note: Michael Arnold Glueck, M.D., wrote this week's wee bit of madness
