Black History Month, Politics, and the Ice Cream Scoop

Richmond, former Capitol of the Confederacy, today remains a city divided by race and history. Rather than finding common ground for the future, Richmond's pride is too often about resentments and hurt. There is plenty of justification for outrage. That does not make it smart to do so. In life, perpetual pouting might be emotionally satisfying, but it won't make you happy. Virginia's leadership often resorts to silly compromises.
Politicians demonstrate dramatic indignation to help make Black History Month a sore point, when it should be a rallying point. Virginia's Governor, Robert McDonnell, has done an admirable job of steering the state toward an honest, but constructive historical perspective. His efforts have not been perfect. But it is gratifying to see a Republican Governor working at recognizing history and using it for a better future. The Democrats can pander to African-American voters while the Republicans incite the indignation of offended FFVs (First Families of Virginia) who are bashed for the actions of their Great Grandparents. McDonnell hasn't stooped to political (pun intended) "rebel rousing". Nor has he followed "political correctness" and "compromise."
Virginia celebrated the lunacy of "King-Lee-Jackson Day" as a holiday, celebrating the life of the Reverend Martin Luther King, Confederate General "Stone Wall" Jackson and Confederate General Robert E. Lee on the same day. So bizarre an act, it could only be the product of a deranged monarch or a state legislature. This would be the historical equivalent of creating "Moses-Hitler Day" to appease holocaust deniers and holocaust survivors. You can't give politicians enough rope to hang the rest of us. Legislative lynching in Virginia is nothing new. "Lynching" was invented, and is named after a Virginian. Lynch and lynching even has its own historical roadside sign in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
"The Devil's Half Acre" in downtown Richmond is also known as the area where "Lumpkin's Jail" stood to sell or beat slaves into submission. After the Civil War, or as it is known in Richmond, the "War of Northern Aggression" the widow Lumpkin, much to the displeasure of other Richmond residents, rented the site for a Negro institute of learning. The bars were still on the windows there and the whipping posts were used by the teachers a lecterns. This educational effort to assist newly Freemen was part of the Wayland Seminary that also had locations in Washington, DC on "I Street" and at Judiciary Square. It eventually grew into what is today known as Virginia Union University. It is one of the alumni of VUU that I want to tell you about for Black History Month.
Alfred L. Cralle, born in Lunenberg County, Virginia in 1866 was an industrious carpenter, porter and mechanic. He eventually became a prominent businessman in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh has a good drawing of Cralle. You might worship Steve Jobs, but for my money, Alfred Cralle, has touched more people. When he was thirty years old, Cralle saw a problem, and on September 2, 1866 he solved it by filing his patent for the ice cream scoop. No more sticky ice cream. No more using a number of utensils and scraping the ice cream. With Cralle's invention you could use one hand to scoop the ice cream, and release it into a cone or into a dish by pressing a lever with your thumb. So, on this 115th Anniversary of the Ice Cream Scoop, I salute that noble, son of the South, Alfred L. Cralle, who has benefited all of mankind and create millions of smile for ice cream lovers throughout the world. So, on February 2, celebrate Black History Month, no matter who you are, with an ice cream cone.
