The Creator gave burdens, also shoulders.
— Jewish saying

'PLEASE DON'T TAKE THIS AS A SCOLDING'

[TUESDAY's update is below. PLEASE read this letter from a loyal reader til the end. It's short.]

A quick story and a word.

During early October 2016, my wife and I were at a state park in eastern Nebraska. We'd gone to the boat landing to enjoy the early morning quiet and the view. I heard what sounded like a shofar, then another. Since I'd thought we were the only ones there so early, I was piqued.

We discovered an even more secluded portion of the landing, where two couples were enjoying the beauties as we had. Both men had shofars and they were discussing scriptures. As it turned out, none of us are Jewish, and all six of us are regular readers of Jewish World Review.

Now the word. As the Channukkah story has come to the gentiles, the priests could continue with contaminated oil or fail with the sanctified oil. God's response was "Not your problem. Light the lamp."

What you're doing with the website reaches people that you'll never know. The saying that where God guides God provides is true. I know how easy it is to see the work and be overwhelmed. Look at Jonah: he didn't want to go and he was exactly right about why not.

Your work blesses others. If you don't believe that, quit. If you believe that God can bless others through you, can you trust Him to meet your needs? He can make one day's worth of oil last eight days. Can He take care of you?

Please don't take this as a scolding. It happens to be a problem area in my life, and I'm a slow learner. Your work has helped me to see that I either believe or I don't, and if I believe my life will reflect that belief.

Thank you for everything that you do.

[Editor's reply:] Believing in what I do is precisely why I struggle when logic -- and suffering family members -- dictate otherwise.

I'm touched by your note, especially this line: "What you're doing with the website reaches people that you'll never know." And I want to make sure that continues. God, I'm certain, will always be with me, especially in any attempt I make toward improving our world. The real question is: Will others be as well?

Judaism teaches that God expects action in addition to prayer. Sometimes -- when one can't manage the burden alone -- that necessitates the help of others.

Today's "ponderable", above, is:

"The Creator gave burdens, also shoulders."

PLEASE, loyal readers, act as my "shoulders".
